What is a DOT physical exam?

A DOT physical examination is a health assessment that is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) under their regulations. It is required for any driver of a commercial vehicle meeting at least one of the following criteria:

• Vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR

• More than 15 passengers for which that vehicle is designed to carry

• Hazardous materials are being transported in such a way that placards are needed

• Commercially transporting 8+ passengers by vehicle

A DOT-certified medical examiner conducts a general checkup of overall health regarding vision, blood pressure, heart, lungs, hearing, and fitness overall. Afterwards, the DOT Medical Examination Report (MCSA-5875) will be signed by the examiner. Once you’ve passed the examination, your DOT medical card should be valid for 24 months.

Tips for Your DOT Physical Exam

To help make that very visit go smoothly and fruitfully:

Identification (driver’s license).

Preferably, complete the DOT health history form (MCSA-5875) beforehand, prior to your appointment.

Bring glasses or hearing aids if you have them.

A list of prescriptions and pertinent medical documentation (e.g., sleep apnea CPAP compliance logs).
